Northeastern Vancouver Island
Salt air and a front-row interest in the water.
You do not have to fish to appreciate a town where looking at the water counts as a sensible use of time.
Campbell River’s shoreline, Discovery Pier and nearby outdoor destinations give retirement here a distinctly coastal rhythm. Fishing is part of the city’s identity, but a daily walk and a good viewpoint ask much less of your equipment cupboard. The city is large enough to have its own regional services while still offering a strong relationship to the surrounding sea and forest. For someone considering northern Vancouver Island, it is a place to investigate with ordinary life in mind: groceries, interests, appointments and a home you would enjoy when the weather keeps you indoors.
Discovery Pier makes a good place to cultivate an interest in what everyone else is catching. Tyee Spit adds another shoreline destination, while nearby Elk Falls and its suspension bridge suit a more deliberate outing when access and mobility allow. The range is appealing: a short visit to the water can fill one day, a forest excursion another. Back at Berwick by the Sea, a rooftop garden and arts room offer two more ways to spend the afternoon.

Berwick by the Sea gives Campbell River retirement an ocean-view gathering place, with the Tyee Lounge and rooftop garden among its shared amenities. An arts room, fitness space and billiards add options when going outside feels less appealing. The community is geared to independent retirement living. Tour the suite and the neighbourhood together, and ask how transportation and visiting care providers fit into the monthly service package.
