Could Stratford feel like home?
Arts, green spaces and a welcoming community make Stratford a place many Canadians are calling home.
Ski & stay
A season pass costs a great deal less than a resort mortgage. These eight hills sit within a manageable drive of towns where an ordinary house is still an ordinary price.

Because resort housing is priced on the skiing. In a village at the base, you pay a premium every month of the year for something you use for a few months of it, and you share the town with a visitor economy that empties out in April.
Live twenty to sixty minutes away and the arithmetic changes completely. You get the same hill, a house priced on local wages instead of holiday demand, and a town that still has a hardware store in August.
Drive times below are rough — good enough for a shortlist, not good enough to rely on. Check them yourself, in winter, before you count on any of them.
Blue Mountain — Collingwood, Ontario
Minutes from town, and the honest caveat on this list: Collingwood is the hill town, and its prices know it. Look inland for the same drive at a lower number.
Apex Mountain — Penticton, British Columbia
Under an hour up the hill, with Okanagan lake living at the bottom of it. A mountain road, so winter tyres are the price of entry.
Mount Washington — Campbell River, British Columbia
Around an hour and a bit. Island snowfall is famously heavy, and Campbell River itself is a working town rather than a resort.
Mont Orford — Sherbrooke, Quebec
About half an hour, with several other Eastern Townships hills at a similar range. Sherbrooke is a full city with a university in it.
Ski Wentworth — Truro, Nova Scotia
Roughly forty-five minutes. A small hill by western standards, and the closest thing to a local one in mainland Nova Scotia.
Canyon Ski Resort — Red Deer, Alberta
Twenty minutes or so. Modest vertical, floodlit evenings, and a city with the Rockies still in reach for the big weekends.
Crabbe Mountain — Fredericton, New Brunswick
About an hour. New Brunswick's largest hill, and Fredericton gives you a capital city's services at a small city's prices.
Whitewater — Nelson, British Columbia
Half an hour of deeply serious snow. Nelson has no community guide here yet, and its housing is no longer the bargain it once was — included because the skiing earns it.
Check whether the hill actually runs midweek. Several of the smaller ones open Thursday to Sunday plus holidays, which is fine if you are retired and a problem if you assumed otherwise.
Look at what a senior's pass costs, and at what age the discount starts — it varies more than you would think, and at some hills it is generous enough to change the maths on the whole plan.
Then drive the access road in January. Every hill on this list is reached by a road that behaves differently in winter, and that drive, not the lift ticket, is what decides whether you actually go.
